Status: Approved 8./28/2019
Marc,
I’m pleased to inform you that the additional release you’ve requested in support of Shandaken Whitewater Weekend on August 31- September 2, 2019 has been approved.
Due to ongoing construction activity, the maximum diversion from the Shandaken Portal is approximately 250 MGD (387 cfs) at this time. Therefore, there may be significantly less streamflow observed at the activity site than during past recreational release events.
Have an enjoyable weekend!
Sincerely,
Brenan

Status: Pending
The Esopus Creek is part of the New York City watershed, and is used to transfer water from the Schoharie Reservoir to the Ashokan Reservoir by way of the Shandaken Tunnel and Allaben Portal. Four times a year, depending on watershed conditions, the portal is opened wider, providing higher, faster water for even more exciting tubing!

Dates
June 2nd and 3rd 2018
Hi Marc,
Due to the high level of Ashokan Reservoir, the diversion through the Shandaken Portal and Esopus Creek is currently limited to avoid spilling the reservoir.
The targeted diversion from the Portal will be 350 MGD (540 cfs) effective Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon.
Combined with the natural unregulated flow, the streamflow at Coldbrook should be about 750 cfs. I understand this is less than your preferred flow, but it is the maximum available at this time.
It could be higher depending on the amount of rainfall and how much the current runoff recedes, but the weather forecast is still uncertain.
Enjoy your weekend!
Sincerely,
Brenan

Esopus Creek Release Flows of 6/2 & 3, 2018
July 14th and 15th 2018
Hi Marc,
Unfortunately, the Department cannot support the requested July recreational event.
The limited cold water supply in Schoharie Reservoir has been used to supplement low streamflows in the Esopus Creek. This cold water is needed to promote aquatic habitat. A large diversion from the reservoir for recreational purposes at this time could greatly accelerate the depletion of cold water and put Esopus Creek at risk of elevated water temperatures later in the season.
I’m hopeful that conditions will improve and we will be able to support the Labor Day event.
Sincerely,
Brenan
